HALLOWEEN WEEK: the scariest movie

Yes, we're celebrating Halloween Week here at the Hammer. Last night I was talking to some Friends of the Nib, planning our upcoming art show/party for Saturday night (details below) and we were really getting into the Halloween mood. The subject came up: What is the scariest movie you've ever seen?
I've seen plenty, but if I had to pick the movie that freaked me out the most, I'd have to go with Repulsion. This is a cool little film from 1965 that follows the lovely Catherine Deneuve's harrowing descent into madness. It may look cheesy and retro ironic, but I'm serious. This is the real deal, from director Roman Polanski. If you're bored with rubber-head monsters and dumb slasher movies, rent this one for Halloween. But be warned!

Repulsion was scary. But have you seen Begotten? http://www.amazon.com/Begotten-Brian-Salzberg/dp/B0000541WJ/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7283051-9595332?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1193411311&sr=1-1
Absolutely the creepiest movie I've ever seen.

Thanks, Patti. I'll have to check oujt "Begotten." Some of my scariest movies I saw very young, so maybe they wouldn't hold up now. "Black Sabbath," the movie that inspired Ozzy and Co, was a favorite. "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors," another collection of stories, scared the bejesus out of me. "Kiss of the Vampire," my favorite from Hammer Studios in England. "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane," another fave, and my girlfriend Wendy's number one scary movie. What else?
For high class scary, I love "The Shining," but people say the book was better. I never read it.

Ooo, the book "The Shining" was great. I think the only successful translation of a King book to the big screen. Or any screen, for that matter. I read it one summer when I was housesitting out in the country in a big old house down a long dirt road. All by myself. Also read "Helter-Skelter" that summer. Oh, that's right, it was also the summer I slept with a kitchen knife under my pillow.
